Not the view of the Peak District I would have chosen to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Britain's first National Parks; it showcases a homogenous landscape of erosion gullies and burn scars in poor ecological condition - without a hint of clough woodland or montane scrub.

While we take stock of big, new losses in Dartmoor, I want to take a moment to talk about the micro enclosures happening every day around the country. They’ll never make the headlines. But they completely shape the way we live our lives. This is mine. 🧵

🧵about the concept of ‘shadow places’ as we look beyond the borders of our countryside; to a landscape kinship, and an ethic of care as an alternative to the polarised, nimbyist and entrenched debates which threaten to dominate UK conservation and access.

As parliament debate #AccessToNature today, a personal essay. Deep in my valley is a tree so old it makes my bones ache. There are only a handful like it in the country, and its boughs harbour some of our oldest stories. Yet almost no-one has ever seen it. 🧵

A new report with colleagues from ProtectOurWintersUK. As well as highlighting the impacts, the report sees cycling as part of the solution – not just as a form of green transport, but also as a means to connect with our environment and appreciate it. drive.google.com/file/d/1neIbFM…

500+ people packed into the Blake Theatre for a major event about the River Wye tonight, with representatives from campaigners, scientists, regulators and food companies. Evening opened with ceremonial pouring of the Wye's waters, so that it can be fittingly represented on stage.

People have some bizarre (and sometimes, unhinged) ideas about how humans move in the landscape when they're given unrestricted access. No, they don't trample every bluebell. Nor do they carry out search & destroy operations on every bird nest. Here are some examples 🧵
