Agree with George Monbiot that something has to be done about the influence and opaqueness of some think tanks?

Here's something you can do to start the ball rolling:

And when it comes to climate change, food, agriculture, and associated land use practices are a huge source of emissions too.

Altogether, the food system directly emits about 20-25% of the world's greenhouse gases, or about 30-35% if you include other, indirect emissions.

Agriculture also introduced the largest disruption to nitrogen on phosphorus cycling on the planet. The overuse of fertilizers has degraded lakes, rivers, and coastal oceans across the world.

And nitrous oxide, emitted from over-fertilized soils, is a key greenhouse gas.

Next, consider the amount of water used by agriculture production worldwide.

Irrigation alone is responsible for ~70% of the world's water withdrawals, and ~85% of the world's water consumption.

This has helped compromise countless water resources and watersheds globally.

Why?

First, consider the fact that agricultural production now covers roughly 35-40% of the land surface of the planet -- by far the single biggest use of land on Earth.

This has wiped out more ecosystems and species than anything else we have done.

When it comes to global environmental challenges, we often focus on the impact of fossil fuels -- as we should.

But I think we need to focus a similar amount of attention to the world's food system, and the damages it causes.

The Offshore Petroleum Licensing Bill, to be debated in the Commons today, is a gigantic middle finger from Sunak's government to global efforts to limit climate breakdown.
All for the sake of some supportive headlines in the Telegraph and Mail and some cheap culture war points.

During , I’m going to tweet one article a day from my vegan writing archives. Where better to start than my article about dairy farming. It’s my favourite thing I’ve ever written. Do share if you feel to!
