The GMC and other public bodies use a handful of responses to justify whatever changes they like.

The BMA scope document must be enforced if PAs are to be regulated.

Bang on the money Shaun Lintern 💯%👇

All aspect of NHS performance off the scale bad, and have been falling off a cliff over the last decade or more. Really not DUE to COVID or strikes, which are a distraction.

Zoom out and you see the real picture. Which is really sad 😢

Doctors,

Interested in getting more involved with your union, in representing and advocating for your medical colleagues?

Joining your The BMA Local Negotiating Committee (LNC) is an excellent way to get stuck in!

Training is provided, so get in touch!

Unity is strength. ✊🏼

Had a 4th Year Medical student with me today

He was fantastic- exactly at the level I’d expect for his stage

But in no way capable of running a clinic independently…he’d be aghast even at the suggestion!

The fact we have PAs with HALF his training running clinics in the NHS…

Absolutely.

This is a significant part of the problem.

Another significant part of the problem is people advocating that less qualified and unregulated “associates” with less training, and both lower training and entry standards, are suitable alternatives to GPs.

Who knew?! 🤷🏻‍♂️

Again, Paul Nowak is spot on.

Ecstatic to hear Gen-Z are aware of their rights and willing to exercise them.

I hope they’re the rising tide of change this country needs in re-establishing our lost rights and unchaining our unions to fight for people that have to work.

We have prepped a guide with key concepts that we think the GMC needs to take on board regarding regulation:
- clear expectation that they will be dependent and in an assistant role during training
- they need their own version of GMP

The GMC is now consulting on how its regulation of PAs and AAs will work.

The consultation is open to members of the public, and we've produced a short guide to be used by clinicians and patients who are keen to provide views.

Read it here: bma.org.uk/media/wjnmmbsu… (1/2)

The UK is grossly under-doctored.

c50k short of meeting average European population to doctor ratio.

So it’s not simply a matter of “reversing” this comparative trend between GPs and Consultants.

Redistribution of current resource is insufficient.

We need more of both. 📈📈

Having family who have moved to Cornwall, I know how long it takes to get about.

Practically everywhere is about an hour a way.

Having an endoscopy undertaken by an under qualified, unregulated and unsupervised PA, miles from help?! 🤯

That’s a hard no to consent from me. ✋🏼

IncogPA you are still going on about this?

People make errors

Lesser trained people make more errors

People working illegally without training definitely make more errors

All of the three are correct

Actually it’s about errors as a systemic matter.

Medicine as a profession/system produces some level errors.

Training and education standards for doctors are rightly very high.

If you want to minimise those errors, you don’t lower standards; which is what MAPs represent.

I spoke to about the work of The BMA & Doctors’ Association UK 💙 (notably the late Jenny Vaughan) on the conditions of private hospital Resident Doctors/RMOs.

168 hours on shift, discouraged from calling in sick/tired by sanctions: the system is racist & unsafe for drs and patients

The state of this; brass neck of some people.

Here’s a question;

With NHS England’s recent instruction that ALL aspects of a PAs work must be supervised by a GP;

Surely that means they can’t be doing home visits or rounds at nursing homes without a GP present with them, no? 🤔

Please watch this video.

When I need to call out a plumber I’m grateful to pay £40/h because I don’t have the first clue how to fix my boiler, or the skills to fix a burst pipe.

Doctors are asking for half of that, to fix your kids.

I agree with Tom.

It’s disappointing RCP are late to the party, but let’s focus on the fact they came at all.

This is a welcome and positive shift in tone from RCP.

But with trust so low, words are cheap, time to show you can act for patients and the future of the profession.

Welcome words, and the BMA has already produced a comprehensive scope for MAPs.

The Royal College of Physicians must now endorse it, so we can begin to reverse the destruction of standards of medical practice they’ve presided over.

The profession has spoken very clearly indeed on this.

I hadn’t seen this before today.

This is the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP)’s assessment of the risks and position on the use of PAs in general practice.

This is what professional medical leadership looks like.👇🏼

“Categorically, we are not here to replace doctors”

The Faculty of PAs @ RCP is hosted by the Royal College of Physicians

Their president was invited to a AoMRC meeting, from which the BMA was excluded.

Every time doctors have been asked, we’ve said PAs are unsafe, and they make our jobs harder.
