The first Great Prominent of the year in the Hampshire garden yesterday, showing its marvellous camouflage. #MothsMatter
Emperor Moth (Saturnia pavonia) - North Antrim. The first of these stunning moths appeared today in North Antrim, a day later than last year. Too windy for decent macro shots so these are library images. #moths #moths matter #teammoth BC Northern Ireland Ulster Wildlife Butterfly Conservation 🦋
Powdered Quaker (Orthosia gracilis) -April 2024. A few new moths appearing last night, including several examples of this species. #moths #MothsMatter #teammoth Ulster Wildlife BC Northern Ireland Butterfly Conservation 🦋
This posing Muslin Moth was NFY last night in the Hampshire garden. A reasonable return of 10 of 8 using two 2W LEDs and a few egg boxes. In comparison, the previous night I had 41 of 20 using 2 traps with 70W of actinic bulb/tubes on what was a warmer night. #MothsMatter
Streamer (Anticlea derivata) - North Antrim., April 2024. An attractive species which I get up here most years, but rarely more than one or two. #moths #moths matter #teammoth Ulster Wildlife BC Northern Ireland Butterfly Conservation 🦋
What a stunner. One of the male Emperor Moths to lure in the garden late this afternoon. They have both departed safely #mothsmatter
Three Mullein moths (Cucullia verbasci) have emerged this month from overwintered pupae in the shed. Not sure why I bothered to photograph all 3 when they look identical! Found as caterpillars on Water Figwort in early June 2023. 10 months as a pupa - what a life! #MothsMatter
First #moth of my visit to Yorkshire - a lovely Oak Eggar #caterpillar !

A fantastic image by Chris Knott taken a couple of days ago illustrating the large wingspan of an Emperor moth when compared to a smaller Brimstone. #mothsmatter
I want to avoid photographing a Waved Umber again 'cos it gave me the runaround. Last night's trap (16/7) also contained a couple of new #moths for the year - a Swallow Prominent and a White-shouldered House-moth.
