A sad day for Britain. Passing laws that assert lies the government wish to be true is not something healthy political systems do.

My thoughts are with all those now at risk of deportation to an unsafe country.

This is the truth about global responsibility - it is going backwards not forwards.  Far from a crushing burden on rich countries, aid levels are inadequate to make up for the money being taken out of poor countries.

Covid is in all of these countries, but it is only in the UK that the share of working age people out of employment has risen post pandemic. I would predict that LC is contributing to this UK trend but these graphs would suggest there are also other factors at play.

The 'end sicknote culture' thing is just the latest in the long line of policy topics where the government has decided the goal is weekly headlines about how tough they are rather than any real world change.

Okay - the big domestic news today isn't the fluff around sick notes. It's Rishi Sunak going ahead with a consultation promising big reform of Personal Independence Payments (non-means tested disability benefit for people in or out of work)

Sick leave is a complete irrelevance and a terrible focus for policy (especially as the proposal is to add more bureaucracy and cost into the system.)

There is an issue with rising long-term disability but not one that will be solved by making people's lives more miserable.
