Back in 2010, Ben Jackson interviewed David Marquand in the pages of Renewal. Marquand spoke in depth about his personal political journey, his vision of a republican social democracy, and the fraught relationship between Labour and Liberalism.

There is surely no greater tribute to David Marquand that the issues he grappled with so eloquently remain wholly relevant to British politics today. This is from his 1981 essay on 'club government'.

David’s influence cannot be understated - what a loss to progressive thinking. Thoughts very much with his family and friends.

V. sad news.

Marquand's 'Unprincipled Society' - now overshadowed by the 'Progressive Dilemma' - was a bracing and potent book that reshaped liberal and left debates in the 1980s-90s. Reading it alongside Hirst and Hutton unlocked a key puzzle for me when I wrote FoS.

An inspiring mind & wonderful man

As a Guardian leader writer I loved talking to David as someone who’d held the pen on Manchester Guardian leaders so many moons before

And wonderful books, which really “got” & explained thinkers like Hayek from the opposite tradition

I never met David Marquand but not sure anyone has had such a big intellectual influence on me. And what a great writer.
