🚨NEW VELINDRE CANCER CENTRE🚨 It would be wrong to call this one an exposé. However, the wrong things have been the focus of attention. Clinicians’ concerns, fraud and financial irregularities have played second fiddle to a planning dispute. Here, we put that right.🧵 (1/9)

🚨NEW VELINDRE CANCER CENTRE🚨

It would be wrong to call this one an exposé.

However, the wrong things have been the focus of attention.

Clinicians’ concerns, fraud and financial irregularities have played second fiddle to a planning dispute.

Here, we put that right.🧵 (1/9)

Coverage of this story initially focused on local opposition to building the centre on the “Northern Meadows” site in Cardiff, which will result in the loss of green space. We make no comment on this planning dispute. But the focus on it is regrettable. (2/9)

The new centre will serve people across the whole of South Wales. We all, rightly, want better cancer services. Framing the debate as a planning dispute means anyone not living in the immediate locality is instinctively likely to support the plans. (3/9)

When we deliver cancer services, it’s important we get them right. 160 clinicians and cancer specialists voiced serious warnings about the proposals. Indeed, we took this up at the request of former Vice President of the Royal College of Radiologists, Richard Fitzgerald 💙 🦀. (4/9)

Specialists say the new centre should be located within a major hospital. This would have the advantage of providing patients with immediate access to emergency and intensive care services. This won’t be available at the standalone centre. (5/9)

Clinicians say the centre won’t deliver the best patient care and is potentially unsafe. So why were they ignored? We don’t know for sure. They made their views clear to Senedd members, so it’s strange they were batted away. But there’s an added element to this story … (6/9)

The contract to build the centre went to a consortium including Sacyr Construction, a company guilty of serious fraud offences. It was fined in 2022, BEFORE the contract was awarded. Under the £800m contract, Sacyr’s consortium will run the cancer centre for 25 years. (7/9)

The public will rightly be concerned how and why a company with this history of fraud got the contract. What’s more, costs to build the project have already ballooned by £300million. Clinicians warned the plans were unsuitable. It all just doesn’t pass the smell test. (8/9)

Audit Wales is investigating. They will examine financing and procurement, and “whether there has been a sound basis for key decisions.” It’s due to report in the summer. We’ll keep a close eye on it. Cancer services are too important to get wrong. (9/9)
