The list of

- 2a: PA can't diagnose but can manage somehow once a real doctor has diagnosed

and

- 2b: PA can't play any part in diagnosis or management of (i.e. can't recognise or treat).

according to the PA matrix.

Remember they work in GP/A&E.

Few missing as I got bored.

The 11,346

What if we went in a different direction with ARRS funding? What GP numbers could it fund?

The current ARRS pot stands at £1,441,000,000 or £1.4 billion

Paying an FTE GP £100k a year for 8 sessions... with NI and Pension... would be 127k.

Official GMC council meetings 2015

Makes it crystal clear the intention of regulation isn't safety, but to allow them to act as 'medical role substitutes' up to ST3 level

The GMCs position as a regulator is untenable

Jenna Johnston I remember at medical school, someone requested a list of conditions to revise for a specific exam. The leadership team refused because they didn't want us rote learning specific conditions without understanding everything else.

Ironically that's the entire PA course.

Yes the threshold needs lowering - there’s also a postcode lottery of GPs not following NICE guidelines to test where iron anaemia is present in younger women. Cases of among young people are on the rise - yet we’re too often diagnosed late stage 😔

Tories passed legislation for Physician Associates to replace doctors in a lot of their work.

Doctors and medical organisations say it's dangerous and should NOT be allowed.

Tragically Emily Chesterton died after a PA misdiagnosis. Her parents spoke out on @gmb ⏬️

Despite the courage & determination of the late ’s parents in highlighting how dangerous such a model of care is, this PA job advert is advising the same. 2yrs of training doesn’t equip anyone w/ the knowledge & skills to do this safely.

platinumpizza™ I can't tell what's worse

A: they are telling the truth about seeing under 3s, which is a patient safety concern

B: they are lying, which is a probity concern (by extension also a patient safety concern)

C: B plus the fact advertising such lies mislead prospective students

ALL staff in the NHS from cleaners to consultant surgeons are heroes and do a vitally important job for our health service. However, the fact that Agenda for Change thinks that an administrator should be paid the same as a staff nurse in charge of a ward (Band 5) is mind-blowing.

PA’s are unfortunately a classic example of the Dunning-Kruger effect.

They work well within models where there is around the clock senior supervision (e.g. ED). Outside of that, they’re dangerous because they don’t know what they don’t know.

PAs can save money by replacing less experienced doctors!

Totally, definitely, absolutely not what we're seeing in practice...

The alternative angle to this of course being 'the GMC was aware of PAs being used at ST3 level without the requisite training and chose to do nothing about it' - why were eyebrows not being raised 10 years ago?

I imagine this is how it goes:

Receptionist: what is the reason for the appointment?
Patient: I think I've got a UTI

Physician associate sees 'UTI' as the appointment reason.
Takes a history, does an exam.
Tells GP to prescribe abx.
Posts on Instagram that they cured a UTI.
