The depressing side to urban botany: The only #Thetford residential street population of the nationally scarce Sand Catchfly (Silene conica) again wiped out this year by mowers. There canโ€™t be many UK sites for it on urban/suburban road verges elsewhere โ€“ if any? 1/2

Results from BTO #Nightjar GPS tagging have revolutionised our understanding of wintering locations and migration routes. A neat track from autumn 2022 showing where they slow down/stop (Blue) to refuel & rapidly cross (Orange) the least hospitable habitats. #Springwatch

Also our first non-UK Nightjar ringing recovery from the 1500+ ringed in Thetford Forest. We'll be checking to see if she does make it back home or will she remain to breed in Belgium? Forestry England FOTF.ORG.UK British Birds BTO BTO Suffolk Dorset Nightjars

The Crowhurst Yew, St Georges churchyard, Surrey ๐ŸŒฒ Not only witnessed every King & Queen of England, but was already 2,000 years old when the Romans arrived in Britain. Astonishing to comprehend that this tree was even alive when the Egyptian Pyramids were built.

An unusual (for me) cause of failure for this #Nightjar nest in Thetford Forest. The eggs were moved about 50cm apart with distinct clean puncture marks, indicative of a large avian species. Another important data point for BTO Nest Recording Scheme.

In the Breckland Mugwort pit this month. Looks like it's been a good year for the species with several plants and seed heads.
