Great 1st birding day of the year this morning, starring a GWE which I'd manage to miss previously at Venus Pools until today. Thoroughly enjoyed the members only hides since becoming an Shropshire Ornithology member, definitely recommend. Lovely to see so many out doing what they love today.

VP year off to a modest start 0740-1200 50spp inc GWE, 2 L Egret, Cetti's, W Rail, Red Kite, 61 Cormorant, 39 Gadwall, 14 Shoveler, 2 Egyptian Goose, 80 Lapwing, Raven, 6 Bullfinch but very low finch and bunting numbers round the arable 🤔 #LocalBigYear

VP last few hours of birding of 2021. GWE, 2 L Egret, 2 Egyptian Goose, Blackwit, Pintail, 2 L Grebe, 37 Gadwall, 2 Snipe etc. 39 Mutes in by 1700 but more and most of the geese presumably yet to come in. HNY and good birding for 2022

Venus Pool bird year list 131 including Barnacle Goose, Bewick's Swan, Sanderling, Turnstone, Wood Sands, Ruffs, Caspian & Little gulls, Arctic & Common terns, Osprey, Whinchat, Crossbill etc. Missed a few including Pied Fly & Greenshank. Shropshire Ornithology

As well as the confirmed outbreak near Wem a report has just been received from south Shropshire of a likely outbreak of avian flu which has killed 15 wild geese. The current outbreak is the most serious in the UK ever. Please be vigilant and follow Defra’s guidance.

I don't get many new birds for Shropshire these days, so pleased to see a Great White Egret at Venus Pool today. It was 30 May 1992 that I was co-finder of Shropshire's first Little Egret, also at VP. One of those present today too. Happy days!
