I’m delighted to announce our new paper! We dive into the synergy between sails and optimised routing - which cut pollution by over 30% for a large cargo ships on favourable routes. Co-authors: Alice Larkin 🐝 Simon Bullock John Broderick Dr Nico van der Kolk theconversation.com/sails-and-sate…

New analysis by Branwen Ap Dafydd Tomos on #shipping #fuels has green #hydrogen, waste-derived #biodiesel & #biomethanol as lowest GHG emissions tinyurl.com/Fuelpic, but none are produced at anywhere near sufficient scale for demand. Other options(e.g.wind-assist) needed urgently.

Speaking of which, our #shipping team @tyndallcentre buddy James Mason highlights wind-assist & route optimisation #innovation for #ships tinyurl.com/shipwindblog in a blog based on new analysis tinyurl.com/Shipwindfull. #ClimateAction #cop28 needs a short-term mitigation focus.

1.5C demands unprecedented cuts in fossil fuel use *this* decade. How close is the international shipping sector & International Maritime Organization getting to this in terms of ambition, and what do the 2023 IMO targets imply for the UK's Clean Maritime Plan Refresh Department for Transport - read more here...

Do the IMO greenhouse gas targets for shipping align with the Paris Agreement? Our new paper and blog at the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research digs deeper and outlines implications for UK shipping. Authored with Simon Bullock and Alice Larkin 🐝. And to her TyndallManchester colleagues @Aliceclimate and @cwjonez for joining for an informative Q&A, with a reminder from Alice that given the limits of new tech, aviation demand management is needed for the next few decades. 2/4

We are busy working out if wind-assist for ships is an emerging niche technology with potential to transform the #shipping industry. If you are also curious & fancy studying for a #phd in the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research then this might be for you: manchester.ac.uk/study/postgrad… search "wind-assist"

I think I may have tried to pack too much in, so not everything came across as clear as I would have liked, but I did talk about Direct Air Capture, highlighting that like other SAF, issues of scale & urgency, & competition for renewable elec, pose big challenges for this tech.

We’ve a new article about #maritime #decarbonisation & the need to think strategically & beyond alternative fuels to deliver on 2030 IMO targets. A focus on energy efficiency in *existing* ships & infrastructure is essential tinyurl.com/BeyondFuel tinyurl.com/BeyondFuel2
