Alongside Thangam Debbonaire I am determined that music is part of our young people’s future.

Enjoying and making music is such an important part of society, not just at Christmas.

It’s high time our children got the opportunity to be part of it.

The EBacc should go says an influential House of Lords committee in a report today - because it has narrowed what teenagers learn. On BBC Radio 4 Today Jo Johnson described it as “pernicious “ because it had squeezed out design and arts

We had five new young people join our Senior youth club tonight ❤️ We rely on the hire of our building to pay for the youth work and although it’s a struggle many local youth clubs weren’t as fortunate as us and had to close when the cuts came.

I’m seeing a lot of articles about “‘poor quality courses.’”

Seems like a strange way to say ‘Sunak vows to cut funds to arts & humanities courses, especially those taken by students from low-income households, after successive Tory govts decimate the UK’s arts sectors’

Hands up who took a 'low value degree' & wouldn't be where you are without it. Hands up who thinks EVERY young person should have the opportunity to do the same. Hands up who thinks higher education shouldn't be reduced to 'produces high earners'.

For too long, the creative arts have been squeezed out of the mainstream curriculum.

Labour will make sure that all children, regardless of their circumstances, have equal access to quality arts and creative education.

We will shatter the class ceiling.

I really hope Keir Starmer does put more weight on Music and the Arts today, but nothing will change until the EBacc performance measure is binned. Schools need to be encouraged to prioritise them through the curriculum in order to open the arts up to more young people at KS4.

I’ve never understood why a rigorous creative subject like music is not in the ebacc. And I think we can have both academic rigour and creativity/collab by focusing on a great extra curricular offer

I don't want to be a constant doom-monger, but music departments in secondary schools are often a 'one man (person, sorry) band', so with a recruitment crisis upon us, no music teacher could = no musical activities in school come September. 1/2

Immensely bleak: “Performing arts A-level entries dropped by 19%, while music and drama have both fallen by 7%. At GCSE, entries for performing arts are down 16% on 2022, while music has declined by 12% and drama 7%. Entries for art and design are down 3%” theguardian.com/education/2023…
