A sensible and welcome take on things from Scottish Prison Service whose frustration is palpable. An abnormally high prison population doesn't help prisoners, prison staff or victims.

It’s politics I suppose - but the crisis was called by the Chief Inspector of Prisons. The response of the Scottish Government might be belated - but if our prisons are full then letting some people out early seems like the only answer
Tomorrow we will publish our thematic report on prisoner progression. There are a number of recommendations, but the key point is that the whole system is currently not meeting the needs of Scottish Prison Service and is therefore in urgent need of re-evaluation and further investment.
