Countering the racist misinformation campaign against bail reform and the medias responsibility for propping it up, mk clearly spells out how we must stop tolerating preventable suffering because we are told that is what makes us “safe” teenvogue.com/story/bail-ref…

Clemency should be granted on an ongoing basis. Period. But most Governors wait till one day at the end of the year, reducing the power to what they label as a Christmas gift. Hoping this piece helps change that: bit.ly/3CO7q31

A few days ago, Erick Tavira became the 17th person to be killed by NYC jails. It's horrific and it has to end. Come out to support his family at a rally they're leading this Tuesday (10/25) at 12 noon on the steps of City Hall.

19 people have died in the custody of the NYC Department of Correction in 2022. The following multimedia project, In Honor: Lives Lost in City Jail, pays tribute to those lost this year in city custody, centered on four of the people and their families.  legalaidnyc.org/inhonor

Thread. There is a lot of confusion about Governor Hochul’s new bail proposal and how destructive it would be for New Yorkers. Here is a brief explainer:

A 🧵 on labor and bail reform: UAW Region 9A opposes Governor Hochul’s proposed changes to the landmark 2019 Bail Reforms. As part of the labor movement, we stand against a system which benefits the wealthy, while average working-class people languish in jail, awaiting trial.

BREAKING: The Senate has confirmed Judge Rowan Wilson for Chief Judge. Since August, we have called for a Chief Judge committed to protecting vulnerable people: tenants, incarcerated people, and workers. This is a victory for New Yorkers and for the #TheCourtNYDeserves.

We just had 2 of the deadliest years at Rikers. People are languishing in jails across the state without a trial. It would be unconscionable to weaken bail & discovery laws & send more Black, brown, & poor people to deadly jails. Governor Kathy Hochul Sen. Stewart-Cousins @CarlHeastie

Hochul just said that she believes judges need greater ability to send people to jail before trial because otherwise newspapers will write about how people accused of crimes "that shock the conscience" were not locked up.

This report by RaceNYU demonstrates why we MUST pass Elder Parole and Fair & Timely Parole in the upcoming legislative session! If release rates were equal, there would be at least 1,338 fewer people of color in prison today #ParoleJusticeNY
