#ReclaimSocial Time for good news! Our Cuckoos have started their journey back, and that can only mean on thing: spring is on the way! Soon the cold, dark days will move over for longer evenings and warmer days. Hang in there, and follow our Cuckoos at bto.org/cuckoos

With calm weather forecast for the weekend, it's a perfect time to head out and listen for adult Long-eared Owls calling. We know so little about this species in many areas. Submit your records to your county recorder through the usual channels to help build our knowledge.

Can't stop thinking of #FairIsle Bird Observatory who suffered a devastating fire yesterday. Thankfully, no one was hurt. Not much I can do from here except send support. Here is a link to their #donations page for anyone interested & able: fairislebirdobs.co.uk/donations.html

Since 1988, over 22,000 farm woods have been planted in England. We'd like to know how well birds are colonising these areas. Can you help us? Sign up to the English Farm Woodland Bird Survey to request a square near you and tell us which birds you find: bit.ly/EFWBSurvey

So much netting in the news lately and now this - Tesco using netting to prevent swallows from nesting. Swallows. Declining species that fly here from sub-saharan Africa only to have access to the nest they've used for years denied. PLs RT to get this stopped.

Wow. Tesco netting off swallow nesting sites in trolley shelters at Norwich supermarket. Likelihood is returning swallows will get caught and die. Terrible publicity for Tesco. Would be wise and kind to take the nets down. Chris Packham

Yesterday, the latest #BBSReport2018 was published. Revealing a common theme within the trends for some of our smaller resident birds it appears the 'Beast from the East' had an impact. Read the full report at bto.org/bbs-report BTO RSPB Science JNCC

The joys of colour ring sightings. So pleased to have contributed towards Coot movement study. Another great example of the importance of bird ringing.

Coordinating second year of Breeding Bird Surveys winter farmland squares for agri-enviro schemes on Isle of Wight. Second visit to my Rookley 1-km square today recorded 572 individuals of 33 species, highest numbers for this square. Highlights were a Chiffchaff and 9 Med Gulls (love Meds)

Wonderful article on BBC Springwatch Winterwatch yesterday about oystercatchers😃 Remarkable birds that can change the shape of their bill to suit the type of food they are feeding on! If you spot 2 behaving slightly differently, it could be as they are sporting dissimilar bills!
