Bittern wasn't seen (or more accurately, heard) on a Breeding Bird Surveys square until 2003, ten years after the survey started. Here is Simon Wotton from RSPB Science, who sits on the Breeding Bird Surveys Steering Group, on this marvellous bird.
It is always a pleasure to see pictures from Stephen Dunstan's Breeding Bird Survey square in Blackpool Pleasure Beach (which is a theme park, just in case you were wondering!) This helps to reinforce that Breeding Bird Surveys squares really do cover a variety of habitats across the UK!
