The endless failure of the few psychiatrists who still use ECT to conduct placebo-controlled trials because they ‘know it works’ places them completely outside the scientific process and evidence-based medicine.

George Kirov 3/3 Everytime I say this, I get pile-ons from ECT advocates saying it would be unethical because they know it works (no they don't) and ECT sceptics who say they know the harms outweigh the benefits (no they don't).
A classic failure of evidence-based medicine.
George Kirov 2/3 We need to do the trial(s). This would be difficult, not impossible. We could get advocates and sceptics to agree outcome criteria. I am an experienced trialist and would be willing to help.
Let's just get the fucking evidence. If it works, so be it. If it doesn't so be it.
George Kirov 1/3 I am tired of saying this (which brings attacks from either side) but there are no high quality placebo-controlled randomized trials of ECT; this is a classic failure of evidence-based medicine.
Dr John Read Royal College of Psychiatrists Psychiatry mislead the public for too long. Charles Medawar warned Prof Robert Kendall, then president of the RCPsych, in 1997 of the risk of SSRI dependence. Again in 2003 he warned of a looming crisis. Years of denial compromising #patientsafety .

This wonderful book on voices reviews evidence of how the content and emotional tone of voices correlates with social beliefs: if voices are framed as a ‘symptom’ of a disorder, the experience is far more negative. What if psychiatry is harming patients with its messaging? Charlie Heriot-Maitland
