You’ve probably seen images of looting in #Acapulco after #Otis. My feeling: I’ve seen locals and tourists looting. I haven’t seen a single store or supermarket open. There is no government presence. The economy is destroyed. People getting what they can in a miserable situation

The Mexican government has insisted that only 27 people have died in Acapulco. Today we watched rescue crews pull bodies out of the water. One of the security officials on scene told us they recovered 50 bodies today. 1/

Mexican president AMLO says people in Acapulco should only accept help from the military. Particularly warns against NGOs, saying they’re taking advantage of the situation. Over 2 days, I have not seen the military do anything other than clear roads and highways.

I’m getting word from aid groups that the government is not allowing them to bring trucks into #Acapulco. This is devastating - help is desperately needed and military is not providing it. More to come…

Can finally send pictures from #Acapulco, where #Otis left devastation. Govt response minimal. Thread 👇 Navy pulls bodies out of Acapulco Bay while investigators and families try to identify them. Authority told us 50 bodies had been found Friday alone, despite govt saying 27

In Colonia Zapata, #Acapulco a river overflowed and filled the entire neighborhood with mud and brown water. Locals lost cars, appliances, furniture, pets. No sight of any authority. Lots of children around. Very little food and water

Desperation grows in #Acapulco days after #Otis battered the city. Residents were navigating broken glass, searching for water and trying to find loved ones. Many told me the government was not doing enough. My The New York Times story w/Zolan Kanno-Youngs Elda Cantú nytimes.com/2023/10/28/wor…

#México: 39 muertos tras el paso del huracán #Otis El recuento de los cuantiosos daños continúa, sobre todo en #Acapulco, mientras aumentan las críticas por la lentitud de la ayuda gubernamental, urgentemente requerida en la zona devastada. #DWNoticias /jam

Shared insights with the The Guardian on the sharp contrasts when we discuss the migration of Americans moving to Mexico for a comfortable retirement versus the experience of people escaping violence, discrimination, and hunger, not by choice, but to save their lives.

Last week, I went to Chiapas (one of my favorite places in the world) to report on the rapidly aggravating security situation. What I saw and heard was shocking. Read our story on elections and security in MX in The Economist: economist.com/the-americas/2… #mexico #elections #security

Glad to hear a changing narrative when we talk about migration in Latin America. Particularly in Mexico, a country that has the potential to be a safe destination for vulnerable displaced people from all over the world. youtu.be/QWOZ0i3U29E?si… via YouTube
