We are becoming more efficient in finding the area by composing and decomposing shapes by creating shapes with our pencils instead of our scissors!

look the fact that you don’t understand your kid’s math homework is evidence that the way you were taught it was ineffective at conveying any generalizable understanding instead of just knowledge of rote procedures, not a reason they should be taught it the same way

when was the last time you yourself used the standard algorithm? BE HONEST! (I can't remember the last time I did!) If 2 items cost $.99 would you "line up the 9's add 9+9, write the 8 and "carry" the one" etc.?

a student discovered today that if two numbers have 1 as the only common factor then you multiply the two numbers together to get the Least Common Multiple. Now we are trying this out! If this works then we don't have to list all the multiples out! #becomingmoreeffiecent

Here is the proof to support his thinking! He said he needed a few more to confirm. Can you find an example that doesn’t work?

Let's stop looking at kids in a deficit model now and every year beyond 2020. We all have gaps in our learning and it would be hard for adults to have someone else only focus on what they thought we needed. Why would we want to do this to kids? I might go as far as asking why we are using that type of question in class as well? Not saying there isn't a time and place for it but are we being thoughtful and purposeful of what we put in front of kids?

Using a “less sophisticated” strategy you invent and understand is MORE SOPHISTICATED than applying someone else’s “more sophisticated” strategy that you don’t understand. #iteachmath #mtbos

Yes!! It’s all about making sense and using different strategies based on the numbers! I have learned so many new ways from watching kids solve problems!

When you need an excuse to eat some candy, create a math opener that *requires* you to open up all the bags! About how many peanut mnms did I eat last night? 🤷🏼‍♀️👏🏼 #teachertrick

This video from Graham Fletcher makes me realize that I never REALLY understood division as a kid. I was just a good robot. gfletchy.com/2016/01/31/the… #MTBoS #iteachmath

I am a huge fan of the way @thestrokeofluck describes just-in-time scaffolding vs just-in-case scaffolding. It helped me realize why I made the wrong choices early in my career & gave me a way to describe what we should be doing instead: robertkaplinsky.com/just-in-time-v…
