'We have a huge responsibility, the press, our community, and the wider mainstream world of theatre and everything, is to get the language right because it's discriminating, demeaning and awful.'

Jenny Sealey takes a moment to respond to yesterday's Daily Mail article.

The long-awaited government ‘Action Plan’ for the River Wye looks more like a plan to save the intensive poultry industry than one to save the river.

Over £40 million for incinerators and AD plants to process poultry muck. No system change, just a bung to business-as-usual.

With a backlog of 66k+ serious criminal cases it’s literally incredible that a single hour of court time is being wasted on prosecuting a 69-year old for holding a placard advising jurors of their rights prospectmagazine.co.uk/ideas/law/6570…

The plan in brief:

✅ River Buffers
❌ Only covers England, not Wales
❌ No mention of enforcement action against polluters
❌ No plan to reduce livestock numbers
❌ Promotes more AD plants, which could lead to more maize & soil damage

If you only read one thing this weekend, read this.

Trudi Warner is in court next week for holding up a placard. In the UK. Yes you read that right.

It’s about the rights of juries and issues of conscience.

The law is making an ass of itself in prosecuting a 69 year old climate change protestor for holding a placard telling juries what their rights are. My column

Our citizen scientists monitor hundreds of sites throughout the Wye catchment.

For months, one site - Hollywell Dingle - has been topping our leaderboard of shame as the most polluted.

Has the Environment Agency investigated the source of this pollution?

NO.

This week's cover story for the The New Statesman is probably the most difficult thing I've ever had to write, and certainly the most personal.

Today I handed over the typescript of my new book Is A River Alive? to my editor & friend Simon Prosser.
It felt—after 3+ yrs’ work—like a big moment.
To mark it we walked up to the springs near my house, where a river is born—and the book begins & ends.
More on the project below.

David Cameron Instead of calling on the Israeli military to investigate itself, it would be wiser to call on the ICC prosecutor to speed up his investigations and issue arrest warrants.

Do we have 40,000 brilliant early years educators waiting for jobs?

Or could we instead offer parents support payments to care for their own very young children, if they’d prefer to do that than put them into childcare.

Why not facilitate real choice for parents?

Thanks Defra, I carried that exact quote in the piece if you read it properly. Any idea of a date? When will the plan be finished? Can we see it?

I’m fed up with misreporting of the Welsh Sustainable Farming Scheme.

We can’t afford to play farming off against nature recovery: the two go together.

Glad Private Eye Magazine printed my letter to correct the record.

The absolute sorry state of the UK trying to launch something as basic as a bottle deposit return scheme

2021 - 2023 launch plan. Later delayed to 2024.
2023 - delayed again, to 2025. Scottish one ready to launch but postponed
2024 - ministers say probably delayed again to 2027

Every journalist should be supporting Rt Hon Johnny Mercer in refusing to name his confidential sources. Exactly same position we find ourselves in when a court orders us to reveal who the whistleblower is. Mercer made a determined effort to investigate war crimes perpetrated by UK…

Farmers + environmentalists are on the same side. We need food + nature + a stable climate to survive. Intensive agriculture is the biggest driver of nature + climate collapse + in turn these threaten food security. Time to stop divisive nonsense + focus on joined-up solutions.

Headline writers at the The Times and The Sunday Times seem determined to pin all the country’s food supply problems on green farming schemes. The problem for them is that it just doesn’t stack up

A quick thread on why...🧵

The battle for the future of Dartmoor really is totemic for nature recovery in England. Dartmoor is one the most ecologically impoverished of our national parks (quite an achievement). If subsidised overgrazing and the slow death of that precious landscape is allowed to continue…
