We take a look at 'Biodiversity and Glasgow University' in our latest blog. One area of increasing activity is the University’s approach to greenspace management. More @ scottishpollinators.wordpress.com/2024/04/11/bio…

With bulbs it is worth remembering that daffodils, whilst very popular, are not the best for pollinators. Why not supplement them if you can with some pollinator friendly bulbs – you might try snowdrop, crocus, allium and grape hyacinth. More info @ nature.scot/doc/planting-p…

New Moth Book. My copy of the much anticipated book 'The Larger Moths of Scotland' by Roy Leverton and Mark Cubitt arrived today. It does look really good and will be of interest to many moth recorders in D&G, Scotland and beyond. Definitely recommended!

The latest results from the annual UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme (UKBMS Live Data) show that 2023 was a mixed picture for butterflies 🦋

Half the 58 species had a better than average year while the other half were below average at monitored sites. (1/6)

Did you know that there are some moths in the U.K. with entirely AQUATIC CATERPILLARS?! I didn’t, until last year when I was introduced to the Brown China-mark (Elophila nymphaeata).

What a moth. 🤯🐛

This we're putting the spotlight on the Dotted Border (Agriopis marginaria)

The male of this common species flies from February to April. The female is almost entirely wingless!

The weather has been a little bit better of late so I've had the moth traps out in the garden a few times (VC73 Newton Stewart). The usual selection of early spring moths. Best of the bunch was Grey Shoulder-knot - still scarce in Scotland but my third record here.

Moth Monday: Poplar Hawk-moth (Laothoe populi) is the most widespread hawk-moth in the UK & its distribution increased 27% 1970-2016. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of poplars & willows in a wide range of habitats. (📷Iain H Leach)
