A1: I am here today because of Gary. He was a young scholar who needed his teachers to see the best in him and give him learning opportunities to show his learning. I think we failed Gary. #literacies

A2: Yolie rocks! Interrupter is someone who pauses a conversation or action to have others reconsider another perspective. #literacies

A3: I have students in the Red Mountain Writing Project who are interrupters. One is Jordyn who started Shape the Culture movement in Birmingham. She is featured in the book. Created her own website and podcasts. Network of young change agents. #literacies

A4: Teachers were activists--teaching students how to question, allowing students to leave class without penalty while writing on boards and students tip-toed out, attending planning org meetings at night, teaching critical thinking abt society-#literacies

A4: Students can become interrupters first by reading and thinking about the writing that is front of them. Asking questions. Who is the writer? What is the stance? Is this something that has substance? Who does it privilege? Who is not in the story? #literacies

A4:Teachers can create assignments that inspire students and allow them to get involved in solving the problems or celebrating the wins around them. #literacies

A4: I’ve seen beautiful moments during Socratic dialogues where Ss interrupted peers who didn’t realize harmful implications of claims they made. The 🔑 is STUDENTS initiate/navigate those dialogues themselves. Interruption shouldn’t be about compliance/performance. #literacies

A5: Pre-service teachers must confront their biases. So must teacher educators. Working with the community and families will allow for those biases to surface. A shared experience that is thoughtful, well planned with self reflection is key. #literacies

A4:It’s great when Ss can volunteer at their local orgs to better their community, but I think it’s also a great way to be an interrupter when students are able to have avenues to publish their voices, like through school blogs/newspapers, podcasts, poetry nights, etc #literacies

Caroline B. Rabalais YES! Love this. I’m eyeballs deep in research exploring how Ss can hybridize disciplinary practices & digital #literacies to produce meaningful multimodal texts, so this really resonates. So important this work spreads beyond our classroom walls and into their communities!
