Disabled people are not ok. The pandemic has turned society against us (even more than before).

People were quietly ableist before. Now they’re openly hateful.

It was hard to access healthcare before. Now it’s impossible.

It was lonely before. Now it’s a pit of despair /1 🧵

Kelly In the UK, we now have Tory MPs regularly coming onto news shows saying how much disabled people are costing the country. This kind of talk is dangerous as it starts to make people think that disabled people are a burden - and it's not a million miles from this:

This week, Jaws reports on sheila chandra being admitted to hospital with appendicitis on her 17th birthday, missing her debut TOTP appearance with Monsoon.

Also, Mötley Crüe drop another teaser suggesting UK dates with Anvil are coming!

“The true sickness in this country can’t be found in a benefits office but in Downing Street. It is a political culture demonising people already suffering, and a rightwing media content to parrot the lies and bigotry it is fed.”

Dear 🇬🇧,

We have record numbers of people out of work because of Austerity 1.0, when the Tories defunded your NHS by £400 billion over 10 years. They took away your healthcare. That’s why we’re sick. Don’t let them gaslight you. It’s not your fault.

Dear 7 million disabled people in the UK. Please register to vote and remember today. Rishi Sunak has just stood there at a podium and declared all out war on you if you vote him in again. 🙂

There is no such thing as “a sick note culture.” There is a record high NHS waiting list, crippling housing costs, widespread food poverty, stagnant wages and inadequate benefit rates, a broken social care system, dire mental health services, and closed Sure Start centres.

Carer prosecuted for fraud and forced to pay back £20,000 in carer's allowance overpayments fights to clear his name after DWP acknowledges - six years on - he likely had made an 'innocent mistake'. Utterly enraging story, brilliantly told by Helen Pidd theguardian.com/society/2024/a…

Maybe I’m naive but I thought that as people got sick more often & watched people become disabled they would take covid & public health seriously. I didn’t think that 4 years in we would be halting testing & seeing avian flu spread. We’re going backwards & no one seems to care.

How much more do these people need? Literally sat on a pot of money that they could never spend and every year WE have to cough up more. I want my taxes to go to the NHS, the poor and needy, not this bunch of useless parasitises 😡

Chronic illness sucks in the sense that I’m still the exact same hard working, get after it individual that I always was. That part of me is still inside of me.

Yet I’m held back daily by my symptoms.

I have a theory that one reason most people tried so hard to move on from the current pandemic is because in the beginning, we had to sit with ourselves. We had to be with ourselves and most don’t know how to handle that. Processing uncomfortable feelings is not taught here.

Reflecting on Universal Basic Income, one can't help but ponder: if financial security was a given, how many hidden talents will flourish? How many entrepreneurs, artists, and inventors are we losing to the grind of survival? It's high time we unlock humanity's full potential.

The Arts are, quite literally, one of the few things that make life worth living. Without them society is just a giant marketplace where everything has a price and nothing has a value.
