15°C in southern England tomorrow—just 4 weeks before Christmas. Most of England will be ~8°C above the seasonal norm. 🌍 The wild climate swings we’re seeing will only intensify as the planet continues to warm.

This weekend has been an example of an atmospheric river setup - albeit a weak one. A long ribbon of moist air resulting in prolonged rainfall. They are expected to get more frequent and wetter due to climate change. Are we ready? Clearly not. doi.org/10.1126/sciadv…

Current flooding map in #England. (Wales looks even worse.) The current U.K Govt has 5 missions. But it lacks a mission on climate adaptation. And without such a mission, all its other missions (including its electricity decarbonisation mission) risk being swept away. Literally.

After 4 days of relentless gales and rain, the flooding from Storm #Bert is huge. With global warming injecting more energy into the oceans, storms are becoming larger and more powerful. The Dept. for Infrastructure is fast becoming the Dept. for Repairs.

I was on BBC News (UK) talking about the impact of #StormBert on my local community in South #Wales🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 "It's so important that not only do we phase out fossil fuels, we must actually also massively now invest in climate adaptation... we need to see that from the government right now"

Seems opportune time to share this thread I wrote just 3 weeks ago. This weekend’s heavy rainfall is just a taste of what’s coming. Atmospheric river events will become wetter and more frequent. We know it yet we move from flood to flood hoping things will improve. They won’t.

The heavy rainfall and floods in England and Wales have caused widespread disruption, and shown us categorically that we are not ready for what climate change is going to throw at us. Here’s a friend of mine describing his attempt to get from Manchester to Cardiiff:

If you’re a Guardian or Observer reader, please share this. The need for a strong, free & independent press couldn’t be greater. Yet, here it is. The billionaire Scott Trust is preparing to push a core part of the Guardian over the cliff into the hands of speculators & profiteers

May not fit the narrative trying to be created here but best not rely on old signs - they struggle to keep up! 9 five metre floods pre 2000 10 in the 24 years since 8 in the last 5 years - almost the same as in preceding 200 years! 3 in the last 2 years, including yesterday

My first comment piece in The Guardian is on a topic very close to my heart; the threat that the #ClimateCrisis poses to my local community in South Wales. Here's a thread with a few extra thoughts from me 🧵

Solar panels are now cheaper than fencing. This has got to be triggering the suspiciously-funded anti-solar bot accounts pretending to be humans.
