Residents on one estate I know have been slapped with a £200,000+ bill by an energy provider who’s own mistake meant residents were charged less than what they should’ve over a few years. Now the energy provider is demanding £200,000 from the leaseholders and social housing

❌ No one is really holding developers to account, so they’re essentially taking as long as they want.

❌ There has been a lot of warm rhetoric but the reality on the ground is that leaseholders are still paying the price.

And if those contracts are overwhelmingly anti-competetive, forcing leaseholders to suffer wholly unreasonable severe financial stress?

The UK desperately needs to reform its landlaws. So-called “ground rents” are just pure rent-seeking behaviour that add nothing of value.

To make it make sense, the bill really must mandate Share of Freehold & RMC on all new flats. Clean solution & would end cynical splitting of title (which is genesis of 3rd parties and ‘ground rent’). All achieved without wholesale move to new system.
