This article is misleading - it's safe to travel by train and all the train companies including London North Eastern Railway are working hard to keep everybody safe x.com/AlastairDalton…

A thread. Some thoughts on the railways after Covid. If threads can ramble, this one will. Basic question is whether passenger numbers will recover. There is a strong possibility they won’t because a) home working for many has been shown to be feasible and attractive; 1/

Lilian Greenwood If you bump into this Parliamentary punster could you pass on the message that the extension of the Midland Main Line electrification to Derby, Nottingham and Sheffield is shovel ready and will he authorise it.

I spoke too soon. Just get on and authorise completion of the Midland Main Line electrification before the skilled installation teams on the Bedford-Kettering wiring run of work, there's a good chap.

Michael Holden Lack of people who understand how to run a railway my friend. The knowledge gap is huge. There are more of us on Twitter who can do it than there are in the Dept.

"A feature of the BR Summer 1963 East Coast timetable was the ability for Northern businessmen to have six hours in London without staying away overnight." Example of a passenger-focused railway: conduct research to understand what people want and then act on it.

I've just seen a complete Class 91 IC225 set with an HST loco at each end passing MMO. On 544S to Leicester. Sorry I didn't get a photo. I was oiling the decking.

1/I've been giving more thought to media coverage which either at worst directly implies Driver Brett McCullough was going too fast (he wasn't) or at best leaves the unpleasant whiff of the question hanging in the air. It does come from judging rail speeds as road speeds are

RAIL Magazine Without sounding all "dont forget about us"- ish..... it needs major concentration doing 3 trips a day between London Bridge and West Croydon via peckham Rye calling at all stops, passing yellows and stopping at loads of reds, operating doors (without a guard)😉

Did you know the contact wire in over head line electrification is staggered so that pantographs don't wear in the same place. You can start a staggering rolling programme of electrification by authorising completion of the Midland Main Line electrification.

Brilliant piece on the Tay Bridge disaster by PB Photography #FBPE #NAFO in Rail 914 RAIL Magazine Disaster ultimately led to understanding of wind loads that forms the basis of my discipline of wind engineering.

We’re renewing the railway, near some freight terminals. In a short section there's a level-crossing, followed by a bridge, a level-crossing, another bridge then another level-crossing. Simply for bridges we want the wire low, but for level-crossings we want the level high (2/9)
