The big secret to planning and staying laser-focused on your goals is that there is no secret. It’s as simple as … 1. Decide on 2–3 big buckets in your life. 2. Choose what you’d like to accomplish in each bucket over the next 12 months.

3. Drill down on each goal until it turns into a daily action. 4. Time-block your calendar to make sure you have time to accomplish those actions. 5. Tune out distractions. 6. Do the actions. 7. Repeat and be patient for 365 days. Big results will start rolling in - keep at it!

In other words, don’t reject yourself. Let the committee/scholarship foundation/firm make that decision. Your job is to decide if you’re interested and to ethically make the best application you can. Get aggressive with what you want. Nobody else is going to do it for you.

Starting my career, I thought becoming a better, more senior designer meant making better design work. We’re not told enough that becoming senior also means helping the designers around you be better. Measuring senior talent? Consider how much of a multiplier they are.

On why people buy drills: "They don’t want quarter-inch bits. They want quarter-inch holes.” Really? Or maybe they want a nicely decorated house. Or an IKEA shelve that won’t fall over on their kid. Or a conduit to hide cables when mounting the TV.
