In 1960 the MOD recommended to the Cabinet that the Royal Navy build 'Chinese copies' of US Navy Polaris submarines, and that the US Navy should not go to Holy Loch, but instead to Fort William in Scotland.

None of this is new - but its a good sign that our enemies need to rely on blackmail, not ideological motivation, to draw out our secrets.

In 1957 Cabinet discussed a Spanish Government request to buy 3 ex Royal Navy cruisers and 10 destroyers. The Governor of Gibraltar supported the proposal...

#OTD in 1918, Germany sank the entire Liberian navy with a single shot. After Liberia entered WWI on the Allied side, Germany sent a U-boat to Monrovia that used its deck gun to score one hit on the R.L.S President Daniel E. Howard, sinking Liberia's only gunboat.

Today we had the privilege to be joined by HRH Prince Edward, The Duke of Edinburgh, for our service of dedication.

The ceremony, attended by representatives from Stirling Castle and the wider MOD, saw us formally welcomed into RFA Service ⚓️

In the early 1950s, the UK considered a Turkish request to loan their Navy a cruiser and 16 escorts. The briefing to the PM highlights some of the benefits of doing so, particularly over wider relations with Greece and Cyprus. A fascinating insight to a forgotten time!

Absolute non-story. All RN personnel will still need to have passed a swimming test in Phase One training. This is removing the requirement to be a swimmer during the recruitment phase.

A total non story. Historically you never needed to swim to join and learnt in own time at RALEIGH.
It seems Service is going back to old standard that it had in place for decades.

Here is an intriguing snippet - in the early 1970s an FCO file talks about 'nuclear submarine cooperation with the Royal Netherlands Navy'. How different history could have been!
