It's ! Dolphins will often ride the bow wave of a vessel, as seen here when USS John Warner was conducting sea trials in 2015. Dolphins surf bow waves to go faster and farther with less effort. Being playful and curious animals, they may also do it for fun.

1945, U-1206 was sunk by its toilet. Some accounts claim an engineer turned the wrong valve to flush, but the CO insisted it was a leaky head that caused the sub to become flooded with seawater and chlorine gas. Forced to surface, the sub was attacked and had to be scuttled.

in 1962, John F. Kennedy hosted foreign dignitaries aboard USS Enterprise to watch the Navy demonstrate the latest surface-to-air and air-to-air missiles against a drone. After the missiles failed to score a single hit, a dignitary asked if his country could buy the drone.

“Teddy” Roosevelt may be lauded as the great pro-Navy President, but it was Franklin Roosevelt “who was the most vigorous advocate of naval readiness ever to occupy the White House.” bit.ly/43Kkgvd

During WWII, two officers were trying to pull rank to cut in line for ice cream when someone barked at them to wait their turn. As the officers looked to see who had dared to rebuke them, they spotted ADM Bull Halsey waiting in line with the rest of the sailors.

'Uh, Houston, we've had a problem.' in 1970, Jim Lovell reported that Apollo 13 was experiencing a loss of operating voltage after a 'pretty large bang.' Overcoming their precarious situation, the crew safely splashed down on April 17 and were recovered by USS Iwo Jima.

in 1945, President Franklin D. Roosevelt's funeral train left Warm Springs, Georgia for his final resting place in Hyde Park, New York. FDR's friend Chief Petty Officer Graham Jackson wept as he played 'Goin' Home' on the accordion.

1945, FDR died. One month later, USS Coral Sea was renamed in his honor. In 1950, USS Franklin D. Roosevelt became the first carrier to take nuclear weapons to sea. The weapons would have been delivered by P2V Neptune bombers launched with 'Jet-assisted take-off' (JATO).
