Scenes from Tongatapu... Lots of dust, damage and clean up to do! But generally calm and stable. People are ready to get to it. Praise God we are still standing. #Tonga #TongaVolcano #tongatsunami

#Himawari satellite data in the NOAA/UW-Madison CIMSS VOLCAT system show the onset of the #Epi eruption at ~18:30 UTC on Jan 31, with colors indicating the presence of SO₂ in the #volcanic cloud.

Potential #infrasound detection from the #Epi eruption detected on CTBTO infrasound array IS22 in New Caledonia. The first detection arrives around 18:40 UTC. The signal features very low frequency content, mostly between 0.03-0.14 Hz.

SO₂ emissions from #Epi clearly detected in #Sentinel5P #TROPOMI data on February 1. SO₂ amounts are low (~1-2 kilotons) but part of the plume appears to have reached mid-tropospheric altitudes, indicating a fairly energetic #eruption. Copernicus EU BIRA-IASB
