Thank you to TVDSBLiteracy for an enriching morning of professional development. I learned a lot about the importance of explicit teaching of word study. I see how empowering it will be for students to know the meanings of morphemes. Hoping for PD like this for FI educators too.

Listened to Jan Hasbrouck, Ph.D. on an EDView360 podcast. She quoted Pamela Snow, "Effective instruction is like building fences at the top of a cliff rather than parking ambulances at the bottom". With the right dosage, explicit instruction is necessary for some and good for all.

Listening to Timothy Shanahan on Melissa & Lori Love Literacy Podcast made me think about how asking students to make predictions before reading can reinforce their own preconceptions and biases rather than gain any new knowledge or understanding.
