Yes, please. Assigning singular "causation" in the complex Earth system is a fool's errand, and effectively amounts to a "gotcha" question in journalism from a scientist's perspective. Much better: "Has #ClimateChange affected the intensity or likelihood of the event?

Zeke Hausfather Zeke Lunder ~ The Lookout There is a seemingly pervasive desire, in many circles, to be overly reductive when it comes to complex topics surrounding climate change--which is challenging & frustrating to deal with as a climate scientist-communicator. Sometimes, we really do have to embrace complexity.

Zeke Hausfather Zeke Lunder ~ The Lookout (And don't get me started on logical fallacies stemming from attempts and demands to assign singular causality to said complex and climate-influenced events!) x.com/Weather_West/s…

Zeke Lunder ~ The Lookout Dr Thomas Smith πŸ”₯🌏 Zeke Hausfather I've talked to quite a few ecologists about this, and the same issue applies here: yes, both forest policy are related fire deficits are very important, but we simply would not be seeing fires of the extreme intensity required to kill entire groves of them absent climate change.

Zeke Lunder ~ The Lookout Dr Thomas Smith πŸ”₯🌏 Zeke Hausfather That may well be the case, but absent climate change, we simply would not be seeing level of aridity that supports the kind of exceptionally extreme burning conditions we saw in 2020 southern Sierra fires. There are likely multiple "necessary, but not sufficient" conditions here.

As someone whose professional life increasingly revolves around debunking misinformation by offering nuance & context on complex topics, I'm certain of one thing: if one cedes ground and leaves an information vacuum in its place, mis- (and -dis) information will surely flourish.
