#fieldwork in #Lofoten ⛰🤩 with ⁦Stephen Michalchuk⁩ ⁦Sascha Zertani⁩ Francois ⁦Luca Menegon⁩ and ⁦Olivier Galland - Volcanologist⁩ who dedicated a detailed photo service to a lovely shear zone :) Why do new #earthquakes develop on shear zones, which should be weak 🤔??

Lucky to enjoy #fieldgeology work in #Lofoten to look at #pseudotachylytes formed at #lowercrustal levels, with Luca Menegon Sascha Zertani Francois Renard and Stephen Michalchuk. These pseudotachylites are markers of fossil #earthquakes

The third paper of Ole Rabbel's PhD thesis is out, congrats Ole! It presents detailed descriptions of the complex fracturing processes occurring in igneous petroleum systems from world-class outcrop at El Manzano, #Neuquen basin, Argentina. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

The fieldwork in Svalbard is going great! This is 210:40, full daylight! A bit tired and hungry though, and we must come down the mountain… yesterday very foggy Olivier Galland - Volcanologist Hans Jørgen Kjøll

After 8 days of fieldwork in Dicksonland, Svalbard, we are safely returning to Longyearbyen. 180 rock samples are waiting for our work!

- 80 km hiked in steep mountains - 4000 m positive denivelation - 170 rock samples - 2190 drone photos for photogrammetry - wet feet, blisters, torn toenails, and tendonitis Thanks so much to Hans Jørgen Kjøll, Rafael, Jonathan and Petr for making this expedition a scientific success!

We had special fieldwork conditions in #Svalbard, as we had the R/V Clione (expedition boat of the #Czech #Arctic Research Station) as base camp. Landing every day, return to boat every evening after long hike for safe and warm sleep. Hans Jørgen Kjøll Rafael Kenji Horota

A great, accessible article about the true volcanological state of #yellowstone caldera complex: far from erupting for a very long time. Very interesting to read, even if it breaks a myth. Don’t Call It a Supervolcano eos.org/features/dont-…

The lava flow at #LaPalma made it to the sea. Authorities fear production of acid steams and the area has been evacuated. volcanodiscovery.com/la-palma/news/…

First thin-section images of #LaPalmaEruption lava, being made at Universidad de La Laguna and Universidad Granada. These rocks contain useful crystals and bubbles to understand the magma and eruption. @DrMattPankhurst especially thanks Jane H. Scarrow for these images.
