Lots of activity and curiosity as I got to teach geology to a group of kids from the school in Longyearbyen today at UNIS. They were excited and participating, and now know that rocks are fun. We also made a cake… but no photos of that.

Did you know that the snow bunting is the only songbird on Svalbard? It is actually the northernmost breeding passerine species. Check out the linktree in our bio for more information.

I came back for the AG-340 Arctic Glaciers and Melt Season Dynamics UNIS in 2019! We had a perfect summer observing glaciers, measuring melt water runoff, doing sediment sampling ... and more!
The highlight: a 4-day cruise around Svalbard to explore remote glaciers ⛵️

I was lucky to come back a fourth time for studying Arctic glaciers in Spring, while taking the AG-325 Glaciology course UNIS ❄️Those 6 weeks were unlike the others: snowscooter driving, extreme temperatures < - 15°C , glacier caving, snow pits and ice coring🤩

For those in #Svalbard :

This year there is a new meltwater channel in #Tellbreen snout where the easy ascent from Helvetiadalen used to be. In the past, the channel ran at the north edge of the glacier.

The channel is big enough to be a risk, especially early in the season!

Good day out! Visited two nearby glaciers today to clean up old mass balance stakes and random trash. We also took drone images for snow free DEM and outline of Tellbreen and Blekumbreen.

Just finished a field work in Billefjorden Trough, a Late Carboniferous rift basin in the Svalbard region, as part of UNIS AG 836 course. 7 days with no internet, no shower, and had to stay in the Czech research station.

The boreal autumn really starting to show its hand now, with the first significant snow to sea level in Svalbard and a hefty (albeit late) re-emergence of the fabled 528-DAM line!

Some of this cooler air will filter south towards the UK, lending a seasonal feel to the weekend.
