The real story about the Indep Chief Inspector isn’t that he was sacked for referring to his own reports. He surely knew that would happen.

It’s that the Home Office has been sitting on his office’s work for a year, silencing him and blocking statutory function of indep reviews

Because God forbid that anyone criticises this government's inhumane policies or raise concerns about their safety and security. This was literally his job.
