Something is going very, very wrong with woodland ride management by Forestry England in East Kent. The last few days have seen miles of rides full of flowers in FC owned blocks of Orlestone Forest SSSI shorn down to billiard table length like this.

A week ago these rides were stuffed with flowers and alive with the sound of grasshoppers and crickets. Today they were silent. A sensible approach would be one of rotational cutting where only one side of a ride is cut in a given year.

But here we are again, and this year is the most destructive Summer ride management I've seen in my reasonably long history of involvement with a forest I love. This senseless, ecologically illiterate and costly approach is being funded by the taxpayer.

Forestry England have had good advice from many quarters & for reasons known only to them have chosen to ignore it or have failed to supervise contractors. This is a SSSI. Has Natural England assent been obtained to undertake this management carried out in this way at this time?

Absolutely, rotational cut and collect is exactly what is needed at this site and many others. It’s no good contractors and managers expecting to do the exact same blanket bowling green style cut every year.

So Defra UK new plan released today to end the badger cull seems to say they could be culling badgers till 2029! This is not ending the cull, it’s extending the cull. They admit they don’t know how many badgers there are and don’t know if they have bTB but will cull anyway😞
