There are several things that trouble me about this tweet from the CEO of Humanists UK. Not least, talking about the value of ‘honest and informed debate’ and then ignoring replies from people with lived experience of the issues under consideration.

This, million times over.

The best part, by a long way, was being by my gran’s side on the last weeks of her life. The worst, was the fight we had to through - at times under a real risk of being prosecuted - to keep her away from A&E for a comfortable death at home.

This pro-Assisted Dying Editorial mentions concerns around vulnerable people and coercion, and then states:

“… one should remember that forcing those desperate to die to stay alive is also a form of coercion.”

“We desperately need politicians willing to acknowledge that assisted dying is one of the most complex and fraught ethical questions they will ever be asked to confront”

I couldn’t agree more

Prof Katherine Sleeman Couldnt agree more. It’s a truly powerful cry for better use of resources, listening, respecting a person’s wishes. Honestly, what are we (medics) here for if not this?

All too familiar and I still feel lingering resentment 8 years on. Grateful to have had the opportunity to work with people who are committed and willing to have sensible conversations about supporting people to 'die well'

There is so much wrong with this, it’s hard to know where to start. So many missed opportunities for putting a care plan in place to ensure this didn’t happen. So many indications that the system is broken.

Here are just a few… 1/n

A lot of my academic focus over the past few years has been on out-of-hours community care provision, and use of Emergency care, for people near the end of life.

👇A brilliant / awful article by Adrian Chiles that simply, perfectly, explains why this matters.

1/ People from the Black Caribbean community are under-represented in our recruitment.

It's important that their experiences are included in our research so that bereavement services are developed to meet their needs too.

I also really welcomed Wes Streeting acknowledging he feels conflicted last week. We need more politicians able to acknowledge the complexities and nuances inherent in such fraught ethical issues - and these interventions do give me some hope!

This is a really thoughtful piece by Nicola Sturgeon on assisted dying. It's strikingly nuanced, which took me by surprise given disagreements on gender & lack of nuance in that debate. Did not have agreeing with her on assisted dying on my bingo card!

This has not been remedied. Dignity in Dying has an almost completely pink map, which they say represents people who *would* want their MP to vote for assisted dying, but their own stats say only 43% of people do want this
