A small example of how this is playing out at the moment: last year the government said higher teacher pay would be paid for out of "efficiencies". In practice what has happened is loads of programmes are being cut with a lot more to come (see: schoolsweek.co.uk/cuts-start-to-…).

The government’s latest wheeze to fix the teacher recruitment crisis: axe funding to NowTeach which had been beating its targets in finding older people to be teachers. Bone-headed.

Given our need for more excellent teachers, and NowTeach proven success attracting people with incredible previous experience to be teachers, cancelling their funding does seem nuts. Also they’ve been asked this summer to advise DfE on recruiting experienced hires into teach?

What is so heartbreaking is that everyone recognises the contribution of NowTeach - & more importantly the Now Teachers. We are doing all we can to try and bridge this period. We are still recruiting a fab 2024 cohort and will continue to support all existing Now Teachers.
