A small example of how this is playing out at the moment: last year the government said higher teacher pay would be paid for out of "efficiencies". In practice what has happened is loads of programmes are being cut with a lot more to come (see: schoolsweek.co.uk/cuts-start-to-…).

The government’s latest wheeze to fix the teacher recruitment crisis: axe funding to NowTeach which had been beating its targets in finding older people to be teachers. Bone-headed.

Natasha Porter OBE (@nporter_) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Given our need for more excellent teachers, and NowTeach proven success attracting people with incredible previous experience to be teachers, cancelling their funding does seem nuts. Also they’ve been asked this summer to advise DfE on recruiting experienced hires into teach?

What is so heartbreaking is that everyone recognises the contribution of NowTeach - & more importantly the Now Teachers. We are doing all we can to try and bridge this period. We are still recruiting a fab 2024 cohort and will continue to support all existing Now Teachers.

Golden opportunity for a philanthropist to step in to cover the hole left by the 🇬🇧 Government’s shortsighted decision to cut funding to the production-line of convertees to teaching from the more experienced demographic in the workforce who seek fulfillment through contributing

Teacher vacancies up almost sixfold since 2010 & more than ever we need people to consider changing to a career in teaching. 14 years in the Tory Govt is still finding fresh ways to fail our children. Only a The Labour Party Govt will deliver for children. theguardian.com/education/2024…

Given the mess the criminal justice system is in, it's critical that Labour sort this contract fiasco they've inherited from the Tories. Unlocked is an incredibly important organisation supplying the future leadership of the prison system.

Katie Waldegrave (@katiewaldegrave) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Couldn’t agree more with Sam. Unlocked is the most brilliant scheme offering such hope and success in a system which so desperately needs more of it.
