Ernest Hemingway once said:

'The first draft of anything is sh*t.'

And luckily, editing is a skill.

But most people struggle to refine their writing – because they don't know where to begin.

So here are 7 of the best editing principles I use every single day:

Having recently been through this process I might be biased, but this paper theorises changing cultures and markets in a way that is insightful but also a joy to read. 🤓🧐🥰

Early 🚂 from University of Bath to UoM News. Thank you to Avi Shankar and Tim Hill for inviting me! It was enlightening to hear Markus Giesler present on publishing in Journal of Consumer Research and join a discussion on the future of our field. I leave feeling inspired to research and write! 🤓

The Ancient Greek word 'telos' means end or goal.

From this root, philosophers have defined two types of activities in life:

1. Telic: With end or goal.
2. Atelic: Without end or goal.

Here's why we all need to understand them:

We saw Alex Edelman’s matinee show today and loved it; hilarious and thought-provoking, tightly-scripted yet improvised, I would highly recommend it! He did point out that the mid-afternoon audience was full of typical BBC Radio 4 listeners though: guilty! 🤷🏻‍♂️

An excellent thread, but I particularly liked this comment. My concern is that while AI may help to automate much writing (whether legitimately or through cheating), future generations may not develop the skills they need to truly stand out as citizens, creatives, craftspeople…

'Your first draft isn't an unoriginal idea expressed clearly; it's an original idea expressed poorly, and it is accompanied by your amorphous dissatisfaction, your awareness of the distance between what it says and what you want it to say.'

This high-rise tower in China isn't a housing block — it's a pig farm.

Each floor operates like a self-contained farm for stages of a young pig’s life. Towers like this are part of China's push to reduce its dependence on agricultural imports. nyti.ms/3RK6cvB

Curious to see the revulsion at these new pig skyscrapers. The pigs don't care that they're up high.

The pigs care that they can't run, root, play, or breath fresh air. And that's equally true of pig factory farms everywhere -- including here in the US.

Back in 2019 Tim Hill and I asked Journal of Marketing Management if we could send out an unusual call for papers; or, more accurately, for songs, apps, zines, and other alternative forms of representing marketing knowledge.
