In 1990, over 9% of the world's newborns did not survive beyond age five.

By 2021, this child mortality rate had declined to 3.7%.

Thanks to progress in global health, 132 million more people are alive in our world today.

I've looked at this post multiple times this evening.

If it seems that *everything* in the world is worse, or that q we study on econ growth, public health, basic service delivery are small/ incremental, it's worth coming back to this. Hard to think of metrics that matter more!

The reduction of child mortality is one of the big achievements of our time.

But it is hard to celebrate something that is *not* happening. So, for my new article, I turned things around.

👇This is the main chart and takeaway.

How many human cases of H5N1 have there been historically? We just updated our dataset on this. Find it here: ourworldindata.org/grapher/h5n1-f…

This only shows reported cases — testing to confirm flu subtypes is limited, especially for subtypes like H5N1.

Learned a lot from Doyne Farmer 's 'Making Sense of Chaos'. Packed with interesting ideas about how to bring complexity science into economics, and the critiques of economics are thoughtful and well-informed rather than straw men.

1 in 5 US retail milk samples test positive for H5N1 avian flu fragments. This suggests extent of infection in dairy cows may be under estimated. ‘Fragments’ does not mean there is an infection risk but this needs confirmation by looking for viable virus. cidrap.umn.edu/avian-influenz…

I see that Metaculus has a median forecast of 3% that human H5N1 cases will exceed 500,000 before the end of the year.

But, only 28 people have made a forecast, and there's only 1 forecast in the last month! Could we get more interest/thoughts on this?

Last year, we built a page on influenza and we are keeping it continuously up-to-date.

We did it for two reasons:
1) The flu is a bad disease, killing about 700,000 people in an average year.

2) We were looking at what was happening to h5n1 and thought it might be helpful if we

Here we go again with this asinine cautious approach to testing for H5N1

CDC is NOT recommending that people with no symptoms - but who have had contact w infected animals - be tested at all… and certainly are not recommending a swab w any frequency.

Though we should have
