We can get cars off fossil fuels, but lithium batteries are beginning to drive an ecological disaster in their own right. We need cleaner cars, yes... but ultimately we need *fewer* cars. And that's something capitalism can't deliver. #degrowth wired.co.uk/article/lithiu…

“It’s a line in the sand and what it says to our species is that this is the moment and we must act now. This is the largest clarion bell from the science community and I hope it mobilises people and dents the mood of complacency.” #ipcc theguardian.com/environment/20…

Yep, and building a third runway at Heathrow, starting fracking, freezing fuel duty, banning on-shore wind, removing all solar subsidies, cancelling zero carbon homes, and many other actions of UK Government, are entirely incompatible with this.

The new #IPCC report says global emissions need to be halved in 11 years to prevent catastrophic warming. How do we get there? 1) High taxes on carbon. 2) Mass investment in renewables. 3) Replace beef w/ plant protein. 4) Regenerative farming. 5) ...and, necessarily, #degrowth.

Here are my suggestions on how to talk about the living world with words that engage people, reveal rather than disguise realities, and honour what we seek to protect.

Iceland's Christmas TV about rainforest destruction banned for being too political This is a disgrace. How can protecting life on Earth be ‘too political’? More likely it challenges vested interests that are too powerful theguardian.com/media/2018/nov…

Do you want to see wildlife enhanced through development? Our consultation proposes that new developments should deliver a biodiversity net gain for the environment, helping wildlife thrive while delivering homes the country needs. #Biodiversity #NetGain ow.ly/JF2x30mPBPO

It's surprising there's any life left in the seas at all, when you look at the intensity of industrial fishing. We are rightly exercised about plastic, but this is a far greater impact, that we tend to ignore.

Agree completely. Already hi-CO2 celebs & those who should know better advertising the highest CO2/hour activity we can pursue. Are they climate deniers or are they just short of cash - perhaps we could have a whip round to help them out. Disgraceful.

Just one transatlantic flight generates as much CO2 as eating meat for a year. Massive thanks to the amazing @TimothyWheatley who made this animation for us flightfree.co.uk/pledge #flightfree2020

⚠️😡Make no mistake, we are angry. This Government has today launched an attack on nature. We don’t use the words that follow lightly. We are entering uncharted territory. Please read this thread. 1/13

It's too late and I haven't got time to get into the ecological and sustainability stuff. So I will sign off with one simple fact. No natural ecosystem, or other natural system, has got a built in eternal growth component. 21/

I work for the civil service, we're all underpaid, we all have some extremely important aspect of society in our control, every department is one nervous breakdown from going under and life would be dystopia without us, you fuckers have no idea.
