I’m often asked about accountability in #SEND. One point to flag - where professionals (EPs, SLTs, OTs) refuse or repeatedly fail to quantify and specify reports for EHC needs assessments, seems to me to be a professional conduct issue parents could raise: hcpc-uk.org/concerns/

Professionals who say children/young people "won't engage" should be saying. "We don't have time or the right skills to build a relationship with your child/young person"!! Just saying. #SEND

It’s very concerning that the Govt appears to be considering changes to the law as part of its review of support for children with SEND. The current law doesn’t need to be changed – it needs to be fully implemented everywhere.

I wish the Tribunal would enforce their power to order costs more widely, or consider strike out applications more seriously to prevent LA’s fighting Tribunals with no evidence to support their case. It adds completely unnecessary additional costs and who loses out? The child/YP.

This is it in a nutshell. Real accountability is needed when local authorities break the law. (And when they lose over 95% of legal appeals, repeatedly year after year - don't try & tell me their lawbreaking isn't deliberate, regardless of the reasoning behind those decisions)

Stephanie Exactly! For me we need to make that distinction to challenge the dangerous narrative that poor MH is a given part of diagnosis. It isn't. This is why #CAMHS refused referrals to treat autistic children. Its discriminatory. Poor MH is the outcome of unmet needs as you rightly say

The proposals in the #sendreview green paper feel so hugely disappointing & I can't see how they are going to address the issues we face. Not yet convinced accountability will be sufficiently improved to make any difference regardless of any legal changes. Tougher times ahead..?

I asked 25 secondary schools in Bristol if they could make these adjustments for my son. 12 have replied. How many people of those 12 have said yes to at least 2 adjustments on this list do you think?

This happens WAY too often During needs assessment, ask for an OT (or SLT) rpt. Told there's months waiting list (obvs not lawful - I know) Parents get independent report. Suddenly LA manages to get an assessment within days. Do. The. Job. Properly. First. Time. #send #ehcp

Listening to Claire Coutinho at the National Network conference - lots of words about how things "will get better" for #SEND but nothing about how the Department for Education are causing and/or exacerbating lots of the problems in the first place. Hard to feel optimistic about any changes 😞

Abso-fucking-lutely. Saying it's bad everywhere gives all areas carte blanche to basically agree that poor practice is fine. 😞

What if this focus on attendance is actually making things worse? What if the more pressure we put on, the more our children bend and some of them break? What if the schools we have created aren’t good places for lots of kids to learn, and they are signalling that to us? 8/
