“No creed but Christ” is a creed. Of course, it’s a woefully inadequate creed, since it tells you nothing about what you believe Christ to be or have done. A Muslim or Mormon could confess this creed.

Ideally, the only people who should be uncomfortable in church are the self-righteous. Everyone else should be relaxed and at peace. Sadly, in most churches, the exact opposite is true. The self-righteous feel right at home while “sinners” are made to feel like lepers.

Did Jesus ever actually claim to be God? Yes. Five examples: 1- He claimed the right to forgive sin (Mk 2) 2- He claimed to occupy God’s throne (Mk 14) 3- He accepted worship (Mt 14; Jn 9) 4- He claimed to be preexistent (Jn 8) 5- He claimed to have ALL authority (Mt 28)

Mixing law and gospel results in blurring and losing both. They are complementary, but distinct. Dear brothers and sisters... The Law tells us, "Do." The Gospel tells us, "Done!" What we do is always motivated and fueled by what is done. What Christ has done, for and to us.

Ironically, legalism leads to lawlessness. This is because the focus is never on the actual Law (it’s WAY too difficult), only on a watered down version invented by the preacher.

I remember when I read through the Gospels for the first time I was truly shocked at how little Jesus was bothered by sinners. Actually, He wasn’t bothered AT ALL by them, only by the self-righteous religious people.

If you were washed with water in the Trinitarian name at an age in a Christian church, your baptism was real and valid. Even if you didn't understand or believe. What gives baptism its power is God's word, not your faith. Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying.

What often masquerades as the Gospel is something like this: “Yes, Jesus paid for the meal of salvation, but you need to leave the tip.” And the tip is your obedience, holiness, stick-with-it-ness. Jesus did his part, now you do yours. But no. You have no part to play. No tip to
