When I first introduced retrieval practice, my students resisted. They still preferred checking their notes or copying from a partner because it felt easier (habits are hard to break). So I took a step-by-step approach to show them why retrieval works using a gym analogy. 🧵

Mini whiteboard stars: Ask students to draw a simple star on their mini whiteboard then place it face down. Count them down and ensure they all show it at the same time. I use ‘3-2-1 chin’ and ensure they place their whiteboard under their chin. Once they’ve done it, say,

My 5th math class is good with their basic facts. I've moved onto this and adjusted it to get as much mental math practice in 2-3 minutes as possible. I give Ss 2-3 minutes to finish this. Timer is on smartboard so Ss can record how long it took them. I go over answers afterward

We often hear the math facts are like phonics, but that just isn't true. The counting sequence is like phonics. Math facts are logical building blocks that are better treated like logic. bit.ly/mathpcast249 #MathIsFigureOutAble #MTBoS #ITeachMath #MathEd

New knowledge can only stick if the students have prior knowledge. It is like a puzzle. The more you add the pieces #knowledge, the new knowledge will stick & become more clear like adding a new piece in a puzzle. researchED US
