I read a lot of academic papers about plate tectonics. Many of them assume a prior base knowledge which can make them less accessible for the non-specialist. This one, however, starts with as good a summary of the various models for plate & mantle dynamics as I've read.

#ClimateChange 🌡️ exceptional and caused by human greenhouse gas emissions 🏭 We are causing #globalwarming 100 times faster than past natural changes We are taking Earth’s 🌎 climate beyond natural limits, with carbon dioxide & temperatures levels not seen for 3 million years

Whilst I adore talking geography, I can find it hard to articulate the uniqueness & complexity of it to non-specialists- especially if they have a very reductionist view. This conversation between Mary Myatt, John Tomsett & David Preece is a wonderful tool to help! My notes 👇🏻📝

1/ Powerful footage from the eruption of Marapi, Indonesia this weekend. Sadly, 11 hikers have been confirmed dead with others still missing. This video shows the conditions some of the survivors of the ash, many of whom had to be treated for burns.

There's been a long debate about why there was a big decline in atmospheric C02 in the 16th and 17th centuries. Now, thanks to new analysis by ice core scientist Dr Amy King, we're pretty sure we have the answer: colonialism. Buckle up for a 🧵⬇️

Far too many women have been on the receiving end of harassment, abuse and violence for far too long. With violence against women and girls declared a ‘National Emergency’, we need our male allies to stand up and call out troubling behaviour when they see it. #JustDont

The racist violence we are now seeing on the streets in the UK has been preceded by an intense period of scapegoating refugees and migrants by UK politicians and others – in dangerous rhetoric and policy. This is unacceptable 👇 amn.st/6015YRQ7B
