I've heard tell of academics telling other academics who are struggling with precarity and unemployment to "keep going" and "your time will come" and I cannot believe folks are saying this now, in February 2021, and yet here we are. No. It's time to work toward a viable career.

For a while I was the mother of a child with a rare disease. Thankfully today he is a thriving 7 year old, but you don’t ever forget. While we got to move on, others don’t, and I still think about that a lot.

Here’s something I learned while leaving academia: If more academics had exposure to the way things are done in other sectors there is no way they would put up with most of the poor treatment they currently do. It would be a much better place for all.
