This is a great piece of work showing the fragility of ML algorithms, how badly they can fail in dynamic healthcare settings (ie - most of them) & the need for more transparency & ongoing scrutiny of ML tools. Kudos to Adam Yala Casey Ross and the rest of the team MIT Jameel Clinic for AI & Health

Online free speech matters! To combat Putin, “Ukraine needs Javelin [missiles] and Russians need Internet,” Mikhail Klimarev said. (Internet Protection Society, pro-Navalny NGO) WaPo:How millions of Russians are tearing holes in the Digital Iron Curtain washingtonpost.com/world/2022/05/…

Bravo Arvind Narayanan and Schneier Blog. While there are specific cases where I think public ledgers offer unique benefits for accountability (ie work with Shafi goldwasser et al on preventing unwarranted surveillance usenix.org/system/files/c…) the rest is way oversold.

Excited about this new work on privacy: goal is to bring real traceability and accountability to the use of personal financial data.

Great thread on threats to the security of all Internet comms from misguided police demands. As usual Julia Angwin nails it. Her NYT piece "If law enforcement has reason to suspect us, they should get a search warrant," not leave all users open to attack. nytimes.com/2023/06/13/opi…

I'm no longer active on Twitter/X. Find me at Bluesky Danny Weitzner.bsky.social or LinkedIn. Better yet, in person. Sorry to see this once-engaging platform turned into a personal political megaphone of its owner. That's his right, but it's only 'social' in the narrowest sense.
