No matter how it shakes out at OpenAI, one thing is clear: all of the leading AI companies are firmly for-profit entities and the illusion of OpenAI as a nonprofit optimizing for humanity is gone.

Twitter just informed me that I joined 15 years ago today. How sad to see what it has become.

It reminds me of the end of AOL — these internet platforms don’t die they just become the walking dead. 😢

Thanks to Julia Angwin in @NYTOpinion for highlighting the letter I sent to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on the need for better data on AVs. I'm still waiting to hear back from nhtsagov. nytimes.com/2023/10/11/opi…

“There are no federal software safety testing standards for autonomous vehicles — a loophole large enough for Elon Musk, General Motors and Waymo to drive thousands of cars through,” writes Julia Angwin. Read: nyti.ms/45r6Lj1

The AI 'doomers' are worried computers will get too smart and take over.

But the reality is AI is often too dumb: Consider the self-driving cars in SF that are blocking ambulances and pinning down a crash victim.

Excellent article on the mass theft that is AI.

Before any company can make a digital doppelganger of you, Julia Angwin argues there must be 'three Cs':

✅Consent
✅Control
✅Compensation.

AI is leading to a tragedy of the commons: It is overgrazing the commons, scraping up everything it can, and is also being used to pollute the commons with untrustworthy content.

New EU rules are forcing the big tech platforms to offer an alternative news feed - which is often just a chronological feed. But I hate to say, chrono feeds often suck.

There is a better way - forcing platforms to offer users a choice of algorithms. cbc.ca/radio/spark/eu…

👇🏼Important thread from one of the best tech investigative journalists.

Tools Surya has built - like Blacklight privacy scanner or Citizen Browser Facebook feed analyzer - are nearly impossible to create with existing mobile phone tools. We need more transparency.

New lows in privacy “promises” — never, unless we are required…

“Amazon One will never share palm data with third parties, under any circumstance, including in response to government demands, unless we're required to comply with a legally valid and binding order.”

An important reminder that companies that provide open source AI models - such as Hugging Face and Stability AI - are still for profit venture backed companies.

Open source doesn't mean noncommercial or magically benevolent.

One way to address the platforms control of public discourse is to break up their monopoly of the algorithms that curate news.

My piece today explores what that could look like, using Bluesky’s choice of custom feeds as a model. (Gift link)
