At a conference today. All my colleagues scheduled to present with me are home with RSV, the flu, or some unknown illness. Given the cost of conferences for orgs and attendees, this is going to reduce willingness or ability to attend because of many travel uncertainties.

New York just became the first state to pass a bill preventing fossil fuel powered crypto mining. This is a very good thing. politico.com/news/2022/11/2…

Someone needs to look into the terrible deals that NYC DOE makes for schools. The iPads that schools have are bloated (why does an iPad given to K-8 students have AP World Language software on it) and have no usable storage space. #mtbos

“it is estimated that training an algorithm to automatically produce text uses 190,000 kWh; that is, 120 times more than the average annual consumption of a household in Europe in 2020.”

🚨HAPPENING NOW: The Federal Reserve just issued a report destroying pundits who've insisted student debt relief is a giveaway to the rich: "Borrowers who benefit most are younger, have lower credit scores, and live in lower-income neighborhoods." newyorkfed.org/medialibrary/m…

Look me clarify this once and for all. No, we are not doing away with tenure! Faculty will still have tenure! We are just working to weaken tenure protections so that “having tenure” doesn’t mean much of anything.

Universities aren’t asking why students aren’t attending classes. I know lots of people will say “they got their tuition. They got their housing money. Their real estate partners are happy.” I think the leaders can’t process the value of care or of curiosity. It’s a business.

This is an incredible article for many reasons, but the thing that strikes me most: this is the same article that would've been written about Second Life in 2006. nymag.com/intelligencer/…

Nature Materials - APC fees are $11,690 (€9,750). Wait... what? It's enough for - paying for 5-10 conferences for my students or - paying for >200 hours of high-res. TEM or FIB or - buying two potentiostats! How have we ended up with this situation... #AcademicTwitter

Honestly the thing about AI that concerns me is less the sentient singularity thesis and more this sucking sense that AI will quickly lead to the complete cultural erosion of *any* kind of human expertise in favor of brute force LLM.

David Austin Walsh (@davidastinwalsh) 's Twitter Profile Photo

And this will not just devalue human expertise (and labor!) It will very, very quickly lead to massive institutional dysfunction.

My fellow Americans, le presenti: The Mayor of Cleveland, Ohio. Take a moment to think about the implications of a U.S. Mayor saying: “We’re putting people over cars.”
