Since when is it the Coastal Commission's job to ensure affordable housing, or to decide which housing is good and bad, especially outside of environmental concerns? We have other agencies for that — people who actually have expertise in the field.

Apparently 30% of market rate housing built in the Sacramento region since 2010 are now affordable to Low Income households. I don’t think I’d have guessed this. Dr. Flo Cofer - she/her Kevin McCarty check this out!

I’m all for new tent encampments, but before you build them you should need to engage with the stakeholders in a series of community meetings, have some design review, and ensure that the tents align with the existing character of the community.

The year is ~ 2033. A city and a suburb are sitting at a bar.

City: “How did you go bankrupt?”

Suburb: “Gradually, then suddenly.”

***

“The illusion that suburbia remains somehow separate from America’s problems is no longer viable.”

Biking home from a Henry Grabar talk, stopped at gas station for milk. The two 20-something cashiers loved my Parking Reform Network stickers (I gave them some) and vented about how awful it was growing up in the unwalkable exurbs. One was a JUST CARS 🛻🚗🚙🚳 fan.

The kids are alright.

Everyone asks where we would put a regional high speed rail network while there are … 4 million miles of 4- to 8-lane highways sitting *right there.* And we already own them!

one thing i know about NIMBYs is they are absolutely humiliated when you point out their opposition to housing, even if they opposed it publicly

The barrier to entry is quite large too. One requires paying $8,100 annually for maintenance and insurance while the other is just $80/month for a HOLO Card monthly pass.

Not to worry though — if anyone tries to, say, have outdoor seating at their restaurant, which is by the water, with a view, and incredible weather, the Coastal Commission will be there to make sure they only allow car parking instead. obrag.org/2023/05/city-c…

It's true. The first photo below is the first ever bike lane in the US, from Davis CA. What's there now is the second photo, in part due to dudes like John Forester who gave traffic engineers an excuse to do as little as possible.
